Parkinson’s Disease and (Online) Casinos

At first, it may sound absurd that Parkinson’s disease might have something to do with gambling. However, due to ongoing research on gambling’s effects, knowledge has been unearthed that goes far beyond actual gambling.

The Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany has studied the therapeutic side effects of Parkinson’s treatment, and it has been demonstrated that one of the side effects of Parkinson’s therapy is gambling addiction.

But what is Parkinson’s disease anyway? It is a neurodegenerative disease in which nerve-cell degradation causes increasing restriction of mobility and a shaking paralysis. This is why people suffering from Parkinson’s very often tremble. The disease primarily affects people over age 50.

Specific medications trigger gambling addiction in Parkinson’s patients from loss of impulse control. This addictive behavior of Parkinson’s patients is considerable as a result. It should be noted that the side effects from Parkinson’s therapy can lead not only to gambling addiction, but also to other addictions, e.g., shopping addiction.

These drugs, which are prescribed to reduce trembling and restricted movement in patients, are suspected to be the cause of these impulse disturbances.
